Grant McDonald took out a thrilling break away victory in his first ever race at the Seddon Park velodrome on Tuesday night. Racing in the combined senior C/junior A grade, McDonald headed off the more experienced Wayne Green as well as impressive returning juniors Madeleine Cooper-Forster and Mark McCormack. Cooper-Forster followed up her top 3 placing with a win in the elimination and second in the 16-lap scratch race. New juniors Ben Hogan and Robbie Manning rode tactically to finish second and third in the elimination race, showing huge potential for the rest of the season.
In the junior B grade, a keen rivalry has been established with exciting sprints in each grade and no one rider dominating the field. Siân Remon claimed the first scratch race, Jody Syme edged ahead in a tight sprint with Grace Hurring to win the elimination and Thirza Smith broke away to win the final scratch race. Amongst the younger boys in this grade, Flynn Cooper-Forster and Sam McDonald are jostling for the top position, with Cooper-Forster finishing ahead of McDonald in the scratch race, but McDonald staying ahead in the elimination and the final scratch race.
New rider Tom Kaminsky took advantage of the handicapped A grade riders in the senior A/B 24 lap points race, finishing ahead of a gutsy Bryan Murray and Nick Hoskin. In a tight elimination race, Kaminsky finished second to U17 rider Ewan Syme, and was followed by Ella Harris. A fast pace, smooth riding and multiple attacks characterised this grade, promising an exciting season of racing.
Racing is held every Tuesday night from 6.30pm at the Seddon Park velodrome in Mosgiel. Spectators are invited to the club rooms or grandstands to enjoy the quality racing on offer.
